The Sands Kenya stands out as a leader in sustainable travel, integrating upcycling and environmentally conscious practices across all of our properties. Central to our farm-to-fork philosophy is the Nomad Farm, where chefs regularly visit and receive fresh, organic produce delivered directly to the kitchens, ensuring sustainability and quality.
Our Thinking Green initiative drives environmental protection, education, and conservation along Kenya’s South Coast, with a dedicated Green Team connecting with the local community to foster meaningful change. The Sands also supports vital conservation efforts such as Diani Turtle Watch, which protects endangered sea turtles and their nesting sites, and partners with the Olive Ridley Project to monitor and safeguard Diani’s sea turtle populations through rescue and research. Additionally, our Nomad Farm employs sustainable practices like composting, recycling, and grey water irrigation to supply much of the our produce locally, reducing carbon footprints and promoting ecological balance throughout our portfolio.
Marine conservation Centre & Diani Turtle watch
Since 2012, Diani Turtle Watch has been a vital part of our commitment to marine conservation along Kenya’s South Coast. Covering approximately 50km of coastline from Waa to Funzi Island, our dedicated team of turtle monitors patrols the beaches each morning to observe and protect nesting activities, respond to turtle strandings, and reduce mortality.
The primary species we protect are the green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), with green turtles being the most prevalent. Based at the Marine Education Centre within Nomad Beach Resort, Diani Turtle Watch plays a key role in educating local communities, schools, and visitors about the urgent need to conserve these endangered species. Through ongoing collaboration and awareness, we strive to safeguard these incredible creatures for future generations.
